The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, named in honour of the talented young photographer tragically killed while on assignment for The Sunday Times Magazine in 1989, has championed emerging photojournalists for over three decades.

Our team at TC & Friends was enlisted to refresh their branding and to advise on the repositioning of their core vision and values. The result is a bold new visual identity and website, celebrating the IPPG’s incredible thirty-year history while looking ahead to the future.

Primary and Secondary Logos for The Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant, or IPPG for short

For the relaunch, we designed two logos – one with the full title of the grant and one ‘monogram’ version, highlighting the grant’s new initials ‘IPPG’. They were inspired by the bold typefaces of traditional print journalism, as well the rich tradition of monochromatic B&W printing.

To help the IPPG team implement the new branding, I designed a succinct set of guidelines instructing on the correct usage of logos, colours and typefaces. Our friends at Commercial Type very graciously donated a selection of weights from the Graphik family to the IPPG. These guidelines were crucial for the eventual handover of the website following the completion of our design.

The new website for the IPPG does more than just showcase the incredible work of their past recipients – it is also a growing resource for young photojournalists. With an interactive map of previous winners (left) and the ability to translate the entire site instantly (right), the IPPg continues to be a global supporter of young photographic talent.

To help celebrate the launch of the Parry’s new era, we designed the graphics for their stand at the PhotoLondon fair in May 2023. Featuring the work of some of their most recent winners, it was perfect kick-off for our new work.
